Getting Setup with the VPN Client After the Authentication Change

To get set up again to use the VPN after the department switches to using NetIDs to login you'll need to do the following:

  • Uninstall the currently installed copy of OpenVPN Connect from your computer.
  • Go to https://vpn.chem.byu.edu
  • Login to the website by clicking on the button that says Sign in via SAML. Do not use the username and password blank.
  • Next you should see a BYU login prompt.  Sign in with your netid@byu.edu and password as instructed on the page.
  • You should get a push notification from Duo.  Respond to this notification as you normally would for other BYU websites.
  • Select if you want to stay signed in or not.  This is up to you.
  • When you attempt to connect you may briefly see a browser window open with a message saying "SAML Authentication Assertion received".  This should close automatically after 5 seconds.
  • Now the OpenVPN Access Server page with the client download options should appear.  Select the option recommended for your device.  This should start the client software downloading to your computer.
  • Install the software as you would any other program.
    • If you get a warning saying "Windows protected your PC" when you try to run the installer, this is not unusual.  You can safely bypass this warning by clicking the More Info link and then the Run Anyway button.
  • At that point, you should be able to launch OpenVPN Connect and connect to the VPN.
  • Future logins to the VPN will look much like the one described above except that if you already signed in to BYU systems for another BYU website you might only see the "SAML Authentication Assertion received" page before connecting.
